Welwyn Wilton Katz was born on 7 June 1948 in London, Ontario. She received a B.Sc. in mathematics from the University of Western Ontario in 1969 and a diploma in education from Althouse College in 1970. For seven years, she taught math at a high school in London before becoming a full-time writer in 1977.
