Moyez Vassanji was born in 1950 in Nairobi, Kenya and grew up in Tanzania. He studied at the University of Nairobi before winning a scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and then went on to earn a Ph.D. in nuclear physics at the University of Pennsylvania. Vassanji came to Canada in 1978 to work at Chalk River Laboratories, then moved to Toronto in 1980 where he was a research associate and lecturer at the University of Toronto. He has been a full-time writer since 1989.
