John Gould was born in 1959 in Toronto. He studied philosophy and environmental studies at the University of Waterloo and has worked as a researcher and tree-planter. He helped create the Otherwords writing program at the BC Festival of the Arts, then went on to become executive director of the Victoria School of Writing. Gould lives in Victoria.
