Sandra Gulland was born 3 November 1944 in Miami, Florida and grew up in Berkeley, California and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She earned a B.A. in English literature in 1969 from Roosevelt College and moved to Canada in 1970. After teaching for a year in Labrador, Gulland lived in Toronto where she worked as an editor. In 1980, she and her family moved to Killaloe, Ontario where she still lives.
