George McWhirter
George McWhirter was born on 26 September 1939 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He received a B.A. and Dip.Ed. from Queen's University Belfast in the early 1960s and taught school in Northern Ireland and Spain before moving to Canada in 1966. McWhirter received an M.A. from the University of British Columbia in 1970, then taught creative writing at the university for the next thirty-five years. In addition to his novels, short stories, and poems, McWhirter has written radio plays, translated works by Mexican poets, and worked as a magazine editor. On 8 March 2007, he was named Vancouver's first Poet Laureate. McWhirter lives in Vancouver.
