Sir Charles George Douglas Roberts was born on 10 January 1860 in Douglas, New Brunswick and grew up near Sackville. He earned a B.A. in 1879 from the University of New Brunswick and taught English literature at King's College. In 1897, he moved to New York City, then to Paris and London, returning to Canada in 1925. Roberts was knighted in 1935 and died on 26 November 1943 in Toronto.
