Allison van Diepen was born in 1977 in Ottawa, Ontario. She studied at Carleton University and finished her degree in history at the University of Edinburgh. For over three years, she taught social studies at Sheepshead Bay High School in Brooklyn, New York before returning to Canada. van Diepen lives in Ottawa where she teaches at an alternative high school.
