Michael Arvaarluk Kusugak was born in 1948 in Qatiktalik, Nunavut (then part of the Northwest Territories) and grew up in Repulse Bay. His family led a traditional Inuit lifestyle and Kusugak did not speak English until he was sent to residential school at the age of seven. Before becoming a full-time author and storyteller, he worked for the government and was at one time the Director of Community Programs for Arctic College. Kusugak lives in Rankin Inlet.
