George Szanto was born in 1940 in Derry, Northern Ireland. He earned a B.A. in German and French from Dartmouth College in 1962 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1967. From 1974 to 2000, he taught communications and comparative literature at McGill University. Szanto lives on Gabriola Island, British Columbia.
