Rudy Wiebe was born 4 October 1934 in the Speedwell-Jackpine region of Saskatchwan, near Fairholme. When Wiebe was 13, his family left the isolated Mennonite community and moved to Coaldale, Alberta. He earned a B.A. from the University of Alberta in 1956, then studied at the University of Tuebingen in West Germany on a Rotary International Fellowship. Returning to Canada and the University of Alberta, he earned an M.A. in creative writing in 1960. His thesis was expanded and became his first novel, Peace Shall Destroy Many. Wiebe then moved to Winnipeg where he studied education at the University of Manitoba and taught high school. He considered becoming a minister and received a Bachelor of Theology degree from Mennonite Brethren Bible College in 1962. He served as editor of the Mennonite Brethren Herald until controversy over Peace Shall Destroy Many forced his resignation in 1963. Wiebe then taught at the Mennonite college in Goshen until 1967, when he became a Professor of Creative Writing and English at the University of Alberta. He retired in 1992 and now lives in Edmonton, Alberta.
