Marian Engel (nee Passmore) was born on 24 May 1933 in Toronto, Ontario. She studied at McMaster University and wrote her Masters thesis, "The Canadian Novel, 1921-55", in 1957 at McGill University under the supervision of Hugh MacLennan. She married Howard Engel in 1962, divorced him seventeen years later, and died 16 February 1985.
