Farley Mowat was born 12 May 1921 in Belleville, Ontario and grew up in Windsor and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. As a teenager, he wrote a column for Saskatoon's The StarPhoenix and then joined the army. After his discharge in 1945, Mowat attended the University of Toronto, earning a degree in 1949. He has been a full-time writer ever since, although not without controversy over whether his books are fact or fiction.

With respect for the privilege, I would like to ask for Farley Mowat's mailing or e-mail address so that I might thank him for serving as an inspiration in my early years as a naturalist. I, too, have taken a journey from naivete to cynicism and outrage. Now, here in our office, forty years later, two books I have co-authored sit on the same shelf as his. I would never have imagined it. I owe him a debt of gratitude for his courage and commitment.
