Sharon Butala (nee LeBlanc) was born in 1940 in Nipawin, Saskatchewan and moved with her family to Saskatoon when she was 13. She earned a B.A. in English and Art from the University of Saskatchewan and a B.Ed. as an educational psychologist. Butala taught at the University of Saskatchewan before marrying and moving to a ranch near Eastend. In 1996, the Butalas donated their 13,100-acre ranch to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, creating the Old Man on His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area.
